| 1. What are the required Trusted Sites settings in Internet Options for Cybertown to work correctly? |
|
You should have three URLs in your trusted sites in Internet Options/Security for
Cybertown to work correctly. Those URLs are (please use them exactly as seen here):
www.cybertown.com
cyber.cybertown.com
ivnwww.cybertown.com
Be sure the "Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone" is
UNCHECKED

| 2. When I click on any of the buttons in Control Panel I get a "page not found" How do I fix this? |
|
Please verify that you have all popup blockers turned off for the Cybertown site. Even
if you "think" you have them all turned off, some are rather sneaky. If you think you
have them all turned off and still get "page not found", in Windows XP you can open the
task manager by pressing control-alt-del and selecting the running process tab (you might
meed to press a button selecting task manager first depending on your setup). Once you
have the running processes in front of you use the Google search engine and type in
the running processes one at a time until you find the offending popup blocker, you can
then find it in your Add/Remove software in the Control Panel and uninstall it.

| 3. I am having problems with Java in Cybertown, I am running Windows XP (with various service packs). How can I fix my Java so that Cybertown works again? |
|
The Blaxxun Platform that Cybertown runs on uses a Java implementation called Virtual
Machine. Microsoft and Sun were in a legal dispute over Microsoft's use of VM and
Sun won that court battle. Microsoft no longer supports it's Virtual Machine. Sun's VM
"sometimes" works in CT. Anyway there is a site out there that allows you to check your
Microsoft Virtual Machine installation and re-install it if needed. Just go to -
http://www.xs4all.nl/~smuller/VMSite2/
And click the Installation Check button on the left menu and follow the instructions from there.

| 4. I have a new computer and I have a problem. the VRML is not loading properly, for the worlds they load at 50% all smudged and the rest is pure black, for object file its just pure black. In the worlds i dont see avatars or objects at all. i uninstalled Blaxxun Contact and re-installed it. How can I correct this? |
|
I good suggestion here is to update the drivers for your video card. Find the video card
in My Computer/Properties/Hardware/Device Manager and do a Google Search for the
video card. Or if it is a well known brand name video card go to their website and get
the newest drivers. Sometimes you can also locate them on Windows Update but
the previous method seems to work better.

| 5. What version of Blaxxun Contact is currently recommended for use in Cybertown? |
|
Blaxxun Contact version 5.1 is currently the "minimum" recommended for use in Cybertown,
there are other Contact version available above 5.1 including two created by a new
company called Bitmanagement Software LLC that has a Bitmanagement Contact
versions are 6.1 and 6.2. These are *not* free and have a nag box in 3D. Version 6.1's
"nag" box is stationary in the lower right hand of the VRML world you are in, version 6.2's
"nag" box is a floating thing and is very unkind IMHO. Blaxxun has recently released a
new version of it's Contact, version 5.3 which cna be found on its newly designed
website. You can still get Blaxxun Contact 5.1 here - http://www.blaxxun.com/en/products/contact/index.html
Just click the "TRY" button at the bottom of the page.

| 6. My 2D is dead, all I have is a gray box with a red X in the left corner, can you help? |
|
Two possible solutions. First go to http://www.java.com and download and install
the newest Java version.
If that does not work then go here - http://www.xs4all.nl/~smuller/VMSite2/ and
click on Installation Check on the left and follow the instructions there to install
Microsoft Virtual Machine.

| 8. No one can see my chat when I am in 3D. Help! |
|
Go 3D and in the box on the right side of the chat window scroll over to the Options tab
and then open the Firewall Configuration. Choose one of the top two settings (whichever one
is not currently checked) and then check the box that says "re-logon with new settings"
and click OK, this should cure the problem.
Usually the "Pass firewall using direct TCP connection" works best but I have heard
where that one needs to be changed to the other setting that is "No firewall or firewall
open for UDP"

| 9. I am having trouble with 3D, all I get is a split sceren with black on top, white on bottom with the Blaxxun Logo, but no chat or images. I have tried Windows Update, all the things in Flo's Troubleshooting Tips. |

Try moving your Temporary Internet Files folder to another location on your hard drive,
such as into My Documents. You can do this easily enough by first making a new folder
in My Documents, name it Temporary Internet Files. Then open Internet Options and on
the General tab, click on Settings under the Temporary Internet Files section. Then click on
the Move Folder button, which causes a menu to popup. Click on the plus sign next
to your C drive, then scroll down to Documents and Settings and click the plus sign next to
that and find your account there (it will say Owner or whatever you use when you logon
to your computer) and click the plus sign there. Scroll down to the newly created folder
Temporary Internet Files and highlight that and click OK
This should cure your problem (with thanks to Megan-Cho for this TIP that she posted on Tech Feedback MB)
One cavet here though. You might also be able to cure the problem by way of completely
emptying out your temporary internet cache from Internet Options. In either event you
SHOULD run a virus and malware scan after doing this as the chances are you have
some type of infection or corrupted file or files.

| 10. I am getting these java errors . when i am in 2D Java.lang.ThreadDeath at java.lang.Thread.stop(Unknown Source) at BXApplet.stop(Unknown Source) at sun.applet.AppletPanel.run(Unknown Source) at java.lang.Thread.run(Unknown Source) |
|
1) Go to http://www.java.com and get the latest version of Java and install.
2) Go to Control Panel then double click the Java icon, go to the General Tab and click delete files at the bottom of the general tab.
3) Go to Add/Remove software in Control Panel and uninstall all but the most recent
version of Java there. I have three things there as I write this. J2SE Runtime Environment
Update 5.0 Update 2 and Update 4 and also Java 2 Runtime Environment SE, v1.4.2._06

| 11. This is not Cybertown specific, but I am hoping someone can help me. During the middle of games or other computer stuff.. even the net my computer randomly shuts itself off. I am using windows XP and the windows crash report says something about a bad graphics driver. |
| There are a few things you can try: 1) Update your video card drivers (See answer to FAQ #4) 2) If you have recently received an update from Microsoft for your video card driver that might be the problem. Try going to My Computer, right click, select properties. Then Hardware tab, then the device manager,. Locate display adapters and click the + to open, right click on video card and select properties, then click the driver tab and select ROLL BACK driver. That will put you back to the previous driver and should cure the problem. 3)Try uninstalling the device from the device manager. Also run http://housecall.antivirus.com using the full test, which checks for viruses and malware/spyware. After reinstalling the device by rebooting, see if it works, then try to find the device manufacturers website or do a Google search for it or have a look at driverguide.com |
| 12. For some reason i cannot open the citizens online list. Can you help? |
|
Citizens Online is a popup window. Be absolutely sure you either have popup blockers
turned all the way off OR that they allow popups for Cybertown. Also be sure that you
have the 3 URLs for CT in your "trusted zones" in Internet Options/Security. Those 3
are:
www.cybertown.com cyber.cybertown.com ivnwww.cybertown.com
They must be exactly as above AND you must have the require HTTPS box unchecked.
|
| 13. I only have the control panel buttons, jump gate bar, outlands, 2d & 3d selections here in the plaza. I can not get them at my house or any where else. |
|
Just make sure you have the three URLs in your IE Security/Trusted sites and have
any popup blockers either turned off or allowing them for cybertown.com
The three URLs are: www.cybertown.com cyber.cybertown.com ivnwww.cybertown.com |
| 14. I have a few fairly old objects I'm having trouble viewing. One object is totally invisible when I drop it in my home, though it's detected because I can beam to it. The other is some artwork that is totally black when dropped in my home. I have contact 5.1 and bitmanagement 6 installed. I've tried different firewall settings as well, to no avail. What have I missed? |
|
The possible solution to the invisible object was posted by CoolKama:
1) For the black artwork, try right clicking on your 3D screen, Choose graphics from the
context menu and choose headlight if it is not checked.
2)I've looked at the object mentioned. It seems the creator included an offsite resource
for the object (specifically the blaxxun PROTO for avatar gestures) the resource it points
to is http://ww2.blaxxun.com/vrml/protos/gestures.wrl#DefaultAvatar
This server/name is no longer available on the internet and is the reason it no longer loads.
If the resource pointed to http://www.blaxxun.com/vrml/protos/gestures.wrl#DefaultAvatar
instead, then it would start working again. I can't however go around fixing all these old
items, as they are copyrighted works. (even if they are broken copyrighted works) and
also i suspect there is prolly a lot of them. I can however supply you a work around to
be able to see your object again. In your system is a file called HOSTS. you can find this
file in the following locations :
Windows XP = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
Windows 2K = C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
Win 98\ME = C:\WINDOWS
This is basically a normal text file if you add the following to the end of the file on a
new line -
80.190.201.251 ww2.blaxxun.com then the object should become visible again!
|
| 15. Is it possible to have a size limit put on files being used in message board posts? |
|
Unfortunately, not it is not. Most of the signature files with music and flash and animated
GIFs and such are put there via links and we cannot control file sizes offsite, sorry. But
those using signature files might want to be considerate of those still on dialup. At the
very least provide an on/off switch on music and do try to keep file sizes overall to a
minimum needed.

| 16. My 3D Chat doesn't work. :( The symptoms are: 1. I can see everyone's chat text and hear their chat. 2. I can see my chat text and hear my chat. 3. No one else can see my chat text or hear my chat. 4. Everyone can see my Av 5. I can see everyone elses AV. I am running XP Home with Service Pack 2. I am running Blaaxun 5.1 Anybody have any suggestions? |
| Yes, go 3D. On the right side of the chat window, scroll over to the options tab. Double click the firewall settings, change between one of the top two selections. Check the re-logon with new settings and see if that cures your problem. |
| 17. My new computer came with Microsoft Windows Vista and my 3D does not work, what can I do to fix it so I can go 3D in Cybertown? |
|
Somewhere around Windows 98 SE or earlier, Microsoft added a little used setting for compatibility problems, allowing one to set a program to run in an earlier Windows "emulation" or "compatibility mode". Thanks to our Security Commissioner for this link - Make older programs run in this version of Windows
|
| 18. My hoodmap links will no longer work, I don't know what happened as I have the latest and greatest version of Flash Player and Flash Active X controls installed (verions reads 9.X where X equals whatever version above 9). What should I do? I can't do my job without my links working! |
| Comtechs Thor and Mauvecat put their heads together to come up with the solution to this one which can be found here - FlashFix |
