Okay, so there is no foolproof way to find old high school friends, but if they have a webpage, email, or use a newsgroup, odds are you can track them down. Listed here are both specialized and general search sites.
Realize that even if you don't know the correct spelling of the name, you can still get information. When in doubt, you can just enter the part of the name you do know. If you are looking for Rebecca Grant, but not sure if she's Rebekah, Becky or Bekah, etc., enter Reb Grant and see what happens. Narrow it all the way down to R. Grant if need be, then start on the Be Grant. You may have to wade through a mountain of results, so do a narrow search first. The same applies to last names.
If it's a student or teacher, you can go to American Universities website and look up the school listing and go to their webpage. There are directories of students, faculty and staff. They may be listed in the school's database. If it's an alumni, then try ClassMates Online and Reunion Hall.

If you fail to find the party in question, don't despair, just try another search site! People move too, so check to see if any of the names are near the town where you expected them to be. If you try all this and exhaust all the search sites, don't give up. People are coming online everyday in droves, so check back later. Happy hunting!
