WHAT IS CYBERTOWN AND WHY?

The purpose of Cybertown is to create a virtual community where people can have fun, be entertained, learn things and explore the best of the Earth Internet.

Cybertown was built in the latter half of the 21st century and is located in the Omega Quadrant not too far from the galaxy known as the Milky Way. It is populated mostly by people originally from Earth. Many of them left Earth after the Great War in the hopes that a new start would lead to more peaceful times.

Despite the distance, Cybertown receives more than 40 million accesses from Earth every month as well as appearing in magazines, books, TV shows, CD-ROMs and newspapers all over the home planet.

As time went by, Cybertown began to separate out into distinct regions such as the Cyberhood which became the more rebellious artistic side of town, Old Town which was where the people who missed Earth as they knew it started to congregate, and Beyond Cybertown where the pioneering explorers headed out. Few of them have been heard from since. Recently Cybertown joined forces with what was known as Colony City to become one under the Cybertown name and free 3DVR apartments are still available in the various Cybertown Colonies here. The part of Cybertown that you are in now is called Old Cybertown.

THE EARTH INTERNET ("EARTHNET")

In the late twentieth century a huge computerized infrastructure known as the Internet was created and eventually grew to encompass virtually all of the Earth when homes and cars started being sold with Internet access built-in as a standard feature. Now of course the Internet spans many galaxies and is linked to the computerized and even organic systems of many life forms.

For many of us however, the original Earth Internet is still the best. We constantly surf the EarthNet looking for sites that we think you'll enjoy and then we categorize them in easy-to-find sections of the town such as the Health Center, the Family Center, the Entertainment Complex and many, many others. You can even get yourself a free Cybertown home page and have it hosted on the EarthNet here.

WHERE IS CYBERTOWN GOING?

As technology advances, Cybertown intends to be right there with new technologies as they appear. Shortly we'll be adding more multimedia as well as more 3D Virtual Reality. More and more interactivity will be added and eventually you will be able to travel through Cybertown in fully immersive 360 degree 3D Virtual Reality with surround sound. Check out the future of Cybertown. The Cybertown FAQ will answer most all your questions about Cybertown and enable you to ask any others that you may have.

Cybertown Community Leaders are here to help you. This includes such things as answering your questions, helping you find things in town, helping you get your apartments, giving tours, helping you with your web pages, manning the Help and Tech Support Bulletin Boards and chat sessions and helping with any problems you run into.

The Community Leaders have created the new Cybertown Help System to enable you to rapidly find key help information in Cybertown.

HOW TO VIEW THE TOWN

If the Cybertown Home Page screen doesn't look like this image - i.e. if the background is not black with stars or if the main images are not centered or if anything looks strange, then you are probably not using Netscape 2.0 or above (3.01 or 4.0+ recommended). The town will look much better if you do.

The majority of people surfing the Net use Netscape and we strongly recommend trying it to see what you've been missing both visually and in terms of speed. Cybertown is best viewed with Netscape Navigator. Download the best versions of Netscape (3.01 or 4.0+) by clicking on the Netscape Now button.

Cybertown also looks OK in Microsoft's Internet Explorer 4 which you can download by pressing the button to the right. We cannot recommend IE 3.0.

We also recommend that you view the town with your browser maximized (at 800x600) and using at least 256 colors. A 28.8k or more modem also makes a big difference!

HOW TO EXPLORE THE TOWN

You can explore Old Cybertown in many ways:

1) Click on buildings on the Map image of the town
2) Click on the underlined hypertext links on the different pages
3) Use the Directory/Index to see everything in town
4) Use the Subway to quickly ride to any place in town
5) Click on the button to find most anything in town
6) Click on the Pod to travel to many places in town
7) Click on the Port to travel to other planets and times
8) Use the Freeway
9) Use the Remote Navigator
10) Use the Navigation Bar at the bottom of most pages

THE TOWN PHILOSOPHY

Building a whole town -- especially one that is growing as fast as this one -- is quite an undertaking and doesn't get completed overnight. We're working on making Cybertown as much of a "one-stop" town as possible as well as a great jumping-off place for your exploration of the rest of the EarthNet.

We want to give you a very rich and rewarding informative and entertaining experience every time you visit Cybertown. Many of the town areas will be constantly having new additions so do keep coming back to check out all the new fun things to see and do -- but beware of the Cyberhood and Beyond Cybertown...

As well as our many links to the best of the best places on the EarthNet, we will be constantly introducing new and original content of our own from our community members and other contributors.

The What's New section will keep you abreast of the changes as well as special events coming up in town as will the Announcements page.

OTHER NAVIGATIONAL TIPS

If you want to go back to a page that you just came from, use the BACK button at the top of your browser. If you want to go back a few pages, use the Go To or History menu item in your browser.

If you want to save any of the Cybertown pages so that you can come back to them later, use the Add Bookmark menu item on your browser.

Many people are using Cybertown as the first page that comes up when going online and using Cybertown as a jumping-off place for their EarthNet exploration. The way to do this is usually offered as an option in your browser Preferences menu item. The address to enter to make Cybertown your home page is: http://www.cybertown.com/

If you set your memory cache to 1000 and your disk cache to 10000 in the Netscape Options menu under Preferences, image loading of pages that you've been to previously will be faster.

If images look strange, you can click on either the REFRESH or the RELOAD button and this will usually clear it up.

If text looks like it doesn't line up properly, go to your netscape.ini file in your netscape directory and remove the International Fonts section. This contains a bug from an earlier version of Netscape and causes all sorts of font alignment errors.

Mac users should try font sizes of 13 or 14.

Prodigy Browser users should set their background color to black and their text color to cyan (bright blue).

For the full multimedia Cybertown experience you can also download the following Netscape plug-ins and other software as and when you need them (you'll only need to do this once):

For single-user 3DVR for PCs, click here and download the complete install of Netscape 3.01 (unless that's what you're already using). Netscape 4 does not enable you to view our VR properly.
For single-user 3DVR for Macs, click here
For multi-user 3DVR for PCs (Win95 only), click this button

For Shockwave multimedia, click here

For The Palace multimedia chat rooms, click here

For Shades of Evil text-based MUD, click here for PC
For Shades of Evil text-based MUD, click here for Mac
For Meridian 59 3DVR MUD (PC only), click here

3D VIRTUAL REALITY

This will soon be a fully 3D Virtual Reality town! Once the town goes completely 3D VR, you will be able to click on the 3D VR button on the Home Page and travel through the town in 3D Virtual Reality. Once inside the buildings you will be able to jump to other buildings and items by clicking on their images. You can see what's already 3D VR here.
