Microsoft Windows - Upcoming Changes

Changes to the way you use Cybertown

Microsoft (http://www.microsoft.com) have recently announced several changes to the way that its operating systems and internet browsers will operate, thus affecting your Cybertown experience in a number of ways:

a) Microsoft has permanently stopped the distribution of its Java Virtual Machine (JVM) and announced that Windows XP Service Pack 2 and beyond will not contain JVM as previous versions of Windows have done. Cybertown users currently rely on the Microsoft JVM to operate the 2D Chat screen and will not be immediately affected by this. However, any new installations of Microsoft Windows XP are likely to result in the JVM not being present as standard. The technical support for the exisiting users of Microsoft JVM will end in 2007.

b) After an upgrade to Windows XP Service Pack 2, Microsoft Internet Explorer users may find that many pop up windows in Cybertown will no longer operate due to increased protection from unsolicited advertisements. If any user experiences this, then they need to follow the procedure outlined below.

c) There may also be issues with embedded content that uses the HTML object tag after installation of Windows XP Service Pack 2. However we are still assessing the impact this will have on Cybertown and no action is currently required of citizens.

Cybertown intends to address these issues in the following ways:

A) Java Virtual Machine

Cybertown has in the past recommended the Microsoft JVM to citizens for use of 2D Chat. However, due to the fact that this product will soon become obsolete and unsupported - meaning users will not be protected against future security or compatability issues, Cybertown has decided to review this recommendation.

There are currently several alternatives to the Microsoft JVM however not all of these are appropriate for all types of user. The product that the technical team have found performs the best is Sun Java (http://www.java.com). It operates in a highly similar way to the Microsoft edition, but offers many new capabilities that will benefit your internet experience out of Cybertown.

Therefore, we recommend that all Cybertown users who meet the following minimum system requirements download and upgrade to Sun Java.

Windows 98 (1st and 2nd edition) or
Windows ME or
Windows NT (service pack 6a) or
Windows 2000 (service pack 3) or
Windows XP Home or
Windows XP Professional (service pack 1)
Windows 2003 Server Editions

You will also need Pentium 166MHz or faster processor with a minimum of 125MB free disk space and a minimum of 32MB of RAM.

Sun Java can be downloaded direct from http://www.java.com with detailed instructions at http://www.java.com/en/download/help/win_manual.jsp or you can download the latest Cybertown recommended version here:

Sun Java Virtual Machine (15 MB)
This download is relatively large and may take some time on slower connections

B) Windows XP Service Pack 2 - Internet Explorer

There is a relatively simple method of ensuring that your Cybertown experience is uninterrupted as a result of these changes. In Internet Explorer, on the Tools menu, click Internet Options, click the Privacy tab, and then click Block pop-up windows. You can then click Options to configure Pop-up Blocker settings.
You then simply have to add the following URL's to your Allow List:

www.cybertown.com
ivnwww.cybertown.com
cyber.cybertown.com

C) Windows XP Service Pack 2 - Embedded Objects

There may be issues with embedded content that uses the HTML object tag after installation of Windows XP Service Pack 2. Cybertown is still assessing the impact this will have and no action is currently required of citizens. This information could change after the Service Pack is released, so please ensure you check this page regularly.
