Please note that at all events and activities are posted in CyT (Cybertown Time).

Cybertown wishes to thank citizens for independently creating colony-related websites. As the sites are outside of Cybertown, Cybertown is not responsible for the content on those websites.

CYBERTOWN STEPS UP SECURITY
by zodiac01

When you logged into Cybertown recently, did you notice anything different? You may have been redirected to a page with which you were unfamiliar. In an effort to ensure the security of Cybertown resident's accounts, IVN is now asking for everyone to create a password question. This is primarily to help members who have forgotten their passwords or who request to make changes to their accounts and it protects your account from being changed by somebody else. Members of the CVN News team constantly remind our residents to check and change their password on a frequent or monthly basis. This Q& A is just one added step of security provided to help keep your password and Cybertown identity safe.

DO YOU READ?

Kind of a silly question isn't it? Yet in a long discussion with a professional computer fixer, he tells us of many users who range from careless to paranoid. Our bets are that we can find many of those features within ourselves and our computer! Here are 3 questions to ask yourself!

  • 1. Do you update your virus checker?

  • A. daily? B. weekly? C. Annually?
Weekly should be and usually is often enough, but Norton (symantec) issued 4 updates in ONE day.
  • 2. Do you change passwords often?

  • A. Never B. Almost Never C. Monthly D. What passwords? My browser is set to remember them all.
Cybertown recommends monthly changes for your CT password!
  • 3. Do you know what tasks are running on your computer?

  • A. What are tasks? B. maybe C. Well, I DO know when my computer is on! D. You bet!
Did you look up tasks? Here is a website for you to look and play.
  • 4. Do you know what a process is?

  • A. No B. No, I don't care! C. Sure! D. You tell me!
Go play at the whatis website above for more information, only if you want it. Thass all! You want more, tell us! No mail...no more of these silly questions.and answers!

    A CYBERTOWN MUSEUM??
    pictures and story by Cai2k

Did you know? Had you heard? Did you visit during one of the online checks? Well CVN has just a few CVN pictures. And now the rest of the story...

There have been rumours, and just a little information about the Cybertown Museum in the making. It is coming in our city's future. We have gathered some details that may change. With approval, you now can read about the Cybertown Museum.

The Museum is going to hit cybertown with celebration, and a fantastic new world full of features. The museum's function is to store old or rare items for people to view. There are many quarters to the Museum, each following a particular theme. So far, the rooms are as follows:
ˇ Medieval Collection ˇ Egyptian Collection ˇ Oriental Collection ˇ Native Peoples Collection ˇ Fantasy Collection ˇ Outer Space Collection ˇ Fine Art Collection Ancient World Collection

    WHAT IS A CARETAKER?

A "Caretaker" is both a city position and an honor. This opportunity comes only from a special invitation by the Founder of Cybertown. Each Cybertown Caretaker is chosen based on observed dedication, performance, experience, and history. Each Caretaker assists the City Council in meetings and advice. Caretakers also vote on the many proposals sent in by Cybertown Citizens. Caretakers also have special tasks that help in the daily operations of Cybertown that include anything from help email to assisting our Founder. JeetKuneDo summarizes it nicely, "In a nutshell, we serve." Right now there are four Caretakers in Cybertown: diverDestiny, Jeetkunedo, crashdummy, and Talonn.

And now the rest of our story...

Hawk said in his announcement establishing this group: "The Caretakers group consists of those whose level of contribution, commitment, loyalty, and trust has led them to having been awarded the highest honor available in Cybertown - the status of City Advisor - together with certain key people from the Cybertown staff. Admission to the Caretakers is by invitation only." Their purpose and goals are clear.

The purpose of the Caretakers is to do those actions that will guarantee the current and future survival of Cybertown, including but not limited to, advising the Mayor and Council as to actions or inactions needed in Cybertown on a regular basis. The Caretakers will also both assist the Cybertown staff with some of their functions and will also obtain the help of other trusted citizens as needed.

"The Caretakers are entrusted with forwarding the Cybertown goals and ideals and its Constitution and other published Guidelines. There is a Caretaker's in-box at the Jump Gate. When you speak to a member of the Caretakers, you are speaking to me. ~ Hawk"

    THOSE BURNING QUESTIONS....
by DeannaTroi for the Sponsorship Team

Hey, what's with those banner ads I am starting to see in Cybertown?

We thought you would never ask! The subscription fee only helps to address the cost of maintaining the site. For the expansion and development that we wish to achieve for our community further sustained investment is needed to enable Cybertown to reach its true potential.

The external advertisements you have been seeing in several areas of Cybertown and now appearing as banner adverts are all part of how this is coming into fruition. It's not all about outside adverts though.

With the technology and sophisticated user group that Cybertown has, there is a wide-open and largely untapped market niche that we have the opportunity to build upon. Imagine living in a colony or neighborhood named after a major production company and seeing their first run movies in a mansion or at the e-Plex. Imagine going to the mall and buying real things for your real house. With the marriage of commerce, 3D technology and you, the savvy user, Cybertown has the ability to make virtual shopping an immersive experience that goes way beyond what the traditional online retail organization has to offer.

    JOIN THE SPONSORSHIP TEAM
by DeannaTroi for the Sponsorship Team

What is the Sponsorship Team? Are they the people who have been paying for others subscriptions from their own pockets?

No. Alhough the name of the team can be confusing, we know. A brief overview of the goal of the Sponsorship team is simply to bring in external corporate sponsors to aid Cybertown in the next stage of its development and evolution.

To do this, we have created a number of focus groups. These are in the form of teams created to target and research potential companies to approach. From there, authorized members are on hand to walk a representative of that company through the process of agreeing to a mutually beneficial arrangement and negotiating and signing the contracts. There are even implementation and support teams already in place to facilitate those agreements within Cybertown. We also have teams that form an ongoing relationship with the sponsor to ensure that the needs of both parties are addressed so that the sponsor and our community obtain maximum benefit from this mutual relationship. To find out more about who is involved please visit http://www.sponsor.jasonrc.com

That sounds exciting to me! How can I get in on it?

The best way is to actively apply to assist the Sponsorship Team in their efforts at securing outside support. There are two levels of involvement offered to meet and match your strengths, experience, skill base and level of commitment.

One, is by filling out the form located at http://www.sponsor.jasonrc.com/sponsorform.htm and letting us see how you are best suited for helping. Fill this out in as much detail as possible and you will be contacted regarding your application.

Two, is by joining our management team. To do this you will need to first fill out the above form, be over the age of 18, AND be able to submit a résumé of real life skills and experiences that you can bring to the team. You can and should submit your résumé to Jason_RC@Cybertown.com

    COUNCIL CONGRATULATS C.E.R.B. WINNERS

WHEN DID YOU LAST CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD?

Cybertown security reminds you that changing your password often is one of the best ways to prevent misuse of your account. In the spirit of your safety we encourage you to do that! After all 12 months is a looong time to use the same password! Actually, you are urged to change your password monthly, make it alpha numeric, and never share it with anyone!

What's Alphanumeric you ask? well...1633ctiscool would be an example. A BAD example we are told! 1c6t3i3s coo9l would be better! CyberAngel2000 adds a link for all of us! The title, Security Tips tells all. http://www.secureflorida.org/index.php?submenu=Security_Tips&src=gendocs&link=Passwords&category=Security%20Tips

    SUBSCRIPTION TIME
Have you renewed or even started your subscription! We used PayPal. Through the good graces of Jason_RC we have the following CVN weekly article on subscribing for our readers. Lyndsey tells us "You can also make a credit card payment over the phone. You can call 1-800-557-2500 and give your credit info and we will update your account over the phone." PayPal, telephone, and snail mail are the pathways to subscribing to Cybertown! And don't forget about Gift Vouchers! They are good gifts all year round!                               CYBERTOWN AND PHONICS

In 1996, an article by Tracy Sherwood entitled, "PHONICS: THE RIGHT WAY & THE WRONG WAY" was printed in a Washington newspaper where it was picked up by Cybertown and published on the Internet. Almost immediately, this article hit the top ten search finds with the keyword phonics. It spread to other major search engines and has remained in the top 30 ever since. This article has changed the face of phonics. Nearly every phonics promotion and materials has based its techniques on the philosophy introduced in this article and from Tracy's phonics program materials. Tracy has written a new article entitled, "THE NEW PHONICS" in which she credits Cybertown's part in this success and has kindly made it available to Cybertown for publication.

We have also created an Evidentiary Tribunal recourse line for any banned ex-members who feel that their bans were unjust. Details and links can be found at the new Permanent Ban Recourse section of the UBP.

    UNIFIED BAN POLICY

The purpose of the UBP is to clarify the points made in the Cybertown Constitution so that there is an understandable set of consequences for common in fractions. The intention is not in any to restrict freedoms but rather to make participation in the site enjoyable and safe for all.

Please make sure that you are aware of the rules and security procedures by visiting The Cybertown Unified Ban Policy.

    OFFICIAL RULES OF CONDUCT

The Cybertown Constitution, the site's Legal Notices, and Unified Ban Policy will all be enforced swiftly and thoroughly.

    ATTENTION, CYTONIANS!

No one in Cybertown needs anyone's Cybertown password for anything ever. You will never be required to give out your password for a Cybertown job. Whoever asks for it should be reported to Security immediately!

It has come to the attention of Cybertown Staff that some people are being told that in order to have a job in Cybertown they must give out their Cybertown login password so that they can be given access rights to do their job. THIS IS NOT TRUE.

Your login password is yours and yours alone. Please DO NOT give out your password to anyone in Cybertown for any reason. Any legitimate person who wants to hire you for a job in Cybertown does not need your login password for any reason.

Any legitimate Cybertown or blaxxun staff person will never ask you for your password. If anyone asks you for your login password on condition of employment, please report that person's nickname to Cybertown Security immediately along with a chat log if you have it.

It's prudent to change your password frequently. To change your password: at login click on the "Change Your Password" link on the right.

Thank you for helping us keep Cybertown safe and secure!

    REMINDER

Citizens are reminded to keep abreast of all that's happening in your neighborhood and around town. As well as the Daily News and the Feedback Boards, there are your local block, neighborhood and Colony message boards to check on as well!

And as well, here are some helpful links to help you around town:

    CONTACT VERSION FOR CT

Although there are new versions of blaxxun's Contact out, if you're running Win98, the ideal version for use in 3D Cybertown is still version 4.4 (if you're using Internet Explorer as your browser, IE 5.5 is recommended for use with Contact 4.4)

If you use WinXP and IE 6, you may experience problems with Contact 4.4. For that operating system and browser we recommend Contact version 5.1

    download 4.4!

    download 5.1!

If you're changing from one version to another, be sure to completely un-install Contact first! If you need help with that, feel free to contact HelpDesk@cybertown.com for instructions.

    HELP GUIDE

Useful new tech info: at this time, Netscape 6 won't work with the 2d chat in Cybertown seemingly due to the new way this Netscape version handles Java. A successful action to get 3D to work is by taking the plugins (npbx3d.dll, npbx3dpro.dll and npbxpro.dll) out of Netscape Communicator's plugin folder and putting them in Netscape 6's plugin folder. Make sure Netscape is shut down before doing that though!

The Cybertown Help Files are comprehensive and contain the information you need to survive and flourish in Cybertown. Put together by Tin-Leon with the seal of approval from Red5, Cybertown's Community Operations Manger, and reviewed by the City Guides, it is here for your use.

    YOUR PRIVACY

Cybertown's Privacy Policy is important to know for your own protection, but it's also important to know if you're planning any events in Cybertown that may require registration of member names. In accordance with new law, only Cybertown nicknames can be requested (no ages, email addresses or "real world" information).

Here is C-town's official Privacy Statement.

    C-TOWN EVENTS POLICY

In order to advertise a community event as "citywide", plans/proposals need to be submitted and approved by Cybertown. Please email your event proposals here.

This does not mean that you have to get authorization to hold block, neighborhood, colony, or club parties to which everyone is invited or for local contests held within your 'hood. This process is for more major event ideas that involve the entire community.

Cybertown is appreciative of everyone's contributions and enthusiasm and this policy ensures coordination, backup, guidance, and the best publicity possible. Thanks!
