POPULATING CYBERSPACE

When you join a multiuser community you need an avatar. An avatar is a representation of yourself in Cyberspace.

The challenge when creating avatars for a community is the fact that when you access a multiuser world, people already there usually have to download your avatar so they can see you. Therefore your avatar should be VERY small in size (15K at the most or below).

Believe it or not, it can be considered rude if the file size of your avatar is too big and people are wasting bandwith (still 28.8 usually as of 1997) just to download your avatar and see you. As you can see, you already have some social interaction , do’s and don’ts in Cyberspace and the rules are still being created by inhabitants of virtual communities.

Above you can see some of the avatars we are working on, we plan to have a full collection of avatars for you to choose from. The avatars were created using AvatarMaker from Sven Technologies. A great program for anyone intending to create their own avatar.

VRML 2.0 allows you to create some animations for your avatar, the challenge is still to keep the file size down. We are currently experimenting with adding natural motions to our avatars. ( Cosmo Player 2.0 is recommended)
